Gerald Caplan
Ph.D in African History, School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London

A former associate professor in the Department of History and Philosophy of Education at the Ontario Institute for Studies in Education (OISE)/University of Toronto, Caplan is the author of two scholarly history books, two UNICEF reports (including one on children in conflict), among numerous scholarly articles. He also wrote the Rwanda: The Preventable Genocide for the International Panel of Eminent Personalities established by the Organization of African Unity to investigate the genocide. For many years he was a regular newspaper columnist and television commentator.

In recent years, Caplan has been a consultant for the United Nation's Special Coordinator for Africa, the Economic Commission for Africa, the United Nations Development Program, UNICEF, the World Health Organization and the African Union.

His major preoccupations today are African development, AIDS and genocide. He was the volunteer chair of the International Advisory Board for the African AIDS Initiative of the University of Toronto as well as senior advisor to Stephen Lewis, UN Special Envoy for AIDS in Africa. He has developed a course on the Rwandan genocide which he teaches for the University for Peace and advises solidarity groups on (among other things) genocide prevention and the crises in Darfur (Sudan) and northern Uganda (the children of Gulu).

He continues to provide public commentary on African development issues and on genocide prevention on television, radio and in newspaper opinion pieces and speaks widely on these issues both in Canada and internationally.
