Cecile Mukarubuga

Cecile Mukarubuga has over 20 years of experience in international development. In her career, she has been responsible for designing and implementing various types of development and rehabilitation programmes in Africa and operating at all levels (grassroots, local, national, regional and international).

Cecile Mukarubuga is currently Regional Director of UNIFEM (United Nations Fund For Women) in Francophone and Lusophone West Africa (comprising of 13 countries), she is also a board-member of PeaceWomen Across the Globe (where she coordinates their projects in Central and East Africa region) and the vice-chair of PREFED - "Programme Regional de Formation et d'Echange pour le Developpement" (a regional NGO operating in Rwanda, DRC and Burundi)

Before joining UNIFEM (in January 2006), Cecile worked as head of the Institutional Development Unit for the IPPF (International Parenthood Federation) at its Africa Regional Office in Nairobi. Prior to IPPF, Cecile worked as head of ACORD -"Agency for Co-operation and Research in Development" in the great lakes region (comprising of Rwanda, Burundi and the DRC).

During the genocide in Rwanda, Cecile suffered trauma and loss of family members. She has since dedicated herself to peace building and reconciliation efforts in Rwanda. In this regards, she has contributed to various publications and training numerous staff of private and public institutions and providing material and psychological support to widows and orphans in Rwanda.
